HEP Honored for Superior Service in Ending Chronic Homelessness:
November 7, 2006

The Field Officer Director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Tampa awarded the first ever “Arnold P. Andrews Strengthening Communities Award” to Barbara Green, Executive Director of the Homeless Emergency Project, Inc. (HEP) at the November 7th Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting.

This award was created in memory of Tampa’s community activist Arnold P. Andrews who died, along with 48 others, when his jet crashed after taking off from Lexington, Kentucky this past August. The award honors HEP for their superior service in ending chronic homelessness and moving homeless families and individuals into permanent housing.

The City and the County have a long history of jointly funding projects with HEP which serve families and individuals who are transitioning from homelessness to self-sufficiency and transitional or permanent housing. Current projects include the rebuilding of the HEP kitchen and construction of new supportive housing units.

HEP deals with the issue at hand in a holistic manner, providing a wide variety of much-needed supportive services designed to promote self-sufficiency and independence, helping people help themselves.
