Antonio, age 15, moved from his grandmother’s home in Mississippi to be reunited with his mother at HEP in December 2008. Despite his happiness for being with his mother, Antonio experienced many ups and downs his first weeks at HEP in a new city, a new school, and with new peers.
Antonio will tell you that being bored invites trouble. So he quickly enrolled in JROTC and band, two familiar activities that feel like “home” to him. With dedication and spirit, in one semester Antonio became the highest ranking freshman in JROTC, earned the JROTC Military Excellence Award, and earned 2nd Place at Nationals for Drill Team.
Upon the invitation of a peer in JROTC, Antonio recently became a member in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). At CAP, a volunteer auxiliary organization of the US Air Force, Antonio meets weekly and learns about piloting, a keen interest to this youth who wants to become a pilot in the Marine Corps. Rather than being overwhelmed with the differing rules of Marine Corp and Air Force, Antonio thrives on the challenge.
Last summer, the Eckerd Family Foundation Scholarship provided Antonio with the funds to attend Destination Aviation a week-long camp that teaches piloting through high-tech simulation exercises.
