It's a program run by the Homeless Emergency Project in Clearwater. They provide bikes to those who need transportation.
"The program is important because it illuminate transportation barriers to all of our residents that are in need of getting to doctor's appointments, seeking employment," Said Zachary White, program director of the Homeless Emergency Project.
Lewis Castro uses his bicycle everyday to get to work, rain or shine. He say the bicycle gives him independence and exercise, and he says he is grateful for it.
"Instead of walking, especially in Florida where it’s so hot, riding the bike is just, it's just a blessing," Castro said.
The program recycles donated bicycles and bicycle parts in all kinds of conditions. Then, people who qualify to get the bikes also get a helmet, a lock, a bicycle care kit and a light set for night riding.
BJ Touhey fixes up the bikes and keeps them running.
"As of this year so far, we've also ready given out about 150 bikes. That alone shows you that it is a needed program," Touhey said.
Lewis Castro says the bicycle helped him navigate a tough period in his life.
"At a time when I didn't have the money to buy a bike, was unemployed -- and it came through for me. You know, it was just awesome," Lewis said.
The Free Wheel Bike program has helped more than 600 people in four years.
